Minister for Life Sciences George Freeman today announced a further £13.7 million investment in stratified medicine collaborations funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC).

These four new awards bring the total of stratified medicine consortia funded by the MRC to thirteen with investment totalling over £52 million – part of the government’s £130 million commitment to stratified medicine set out in the UK Life Sciences Strategy.

The MRC has announced nine short-listed proposals that could be funded under the second phase of its £60m Stratified Medicine Initiative, which aims to boost our understanding of why groups of patients with the same diagnosis differ in their response to treatment.

Parties who believe that they could make a valuable contribution to these short-listed proposals are invited to contact the relevant teams.

The nine short-listed applications for full proposals are in asthma, cancer, hypertension, the lung condition idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lupus, a kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome and transplantation.

Scientists are investigating whether treatment for high blood pressure can be improved by taking a person’s ethnic heritage into account.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is common in the general population. A healthy lifestyle alone is not enough to control blood pressure, and drug treatment is required.

There are a wide variety of drugs available and although these are effective and safe, it is often necessary to try different types of drugs and often to use a combination of two or more drugs.

We are helping to fund an important project to improve high blood pressure treatment. The funding is part of a major medical research funding initiative by the Government.

We have committed over a £1 million to the £3.5 million AIM HY study, which is being led by researchers at King’s College London. The study is one of four stratified medicine initiatives being funded in collaboration with the Medical Research Council (MRC).
